Honour guard and 21-gun salute for Governor General in Victoria

WATCH: Pomp and ceremony welcome Governor General Julie Payette on her first official visit to British Columbia.

A special ceremony was held outside the B.C. Legislature on Tuesday afternoon as Canada’s new Governor General arrived on her first official visit to the province

Julie Payette took part in a special welcoming ceremony that included a 21-gun salute and an honour guard made up of more than 100 members from Maritime Forces Pacific and CFB Esquimalt.

The Governor General, Canada’s 29th since Confederation, then met with veterans inside the Legislature and signed B.C.’s distinguished visitor’s book.

After the ceremony, Payette met with Premier John Horgan.

The former astronaut then attended a special reception in her honour at Government House Tuesday evening. It was hosted by Lieutenant-Governor Judith Guichon and Premier Horgan.

The Governor General will give out medals and honours on Wednesday to community leaders, police officers and volunteers.

Several Vancouver Islanders, including University of Victoria basketball coaching legend Kathy Shields.
