Three people and two dogs were able to escape to safety from a Tuesday morning fire at a home in Central Saanich.
A cat, however, died as a result of the blaze in the 7700-block of Wallace Drive that was reported to Central Saanich fire just before 8 a.m.

One other resident was at work at the time.
Officials say there was heavy fire damage in one of the rooms and the upstairs area of the house along with water and smoke damage throughout.
Sidney volunteer fire and North Saanich fire personnel also helped knock down the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and Emergency Social Services was called in to assist.
