The highway connecting the coastal communities of Tofino and Ucluelet to the rest of Vancouver Island has been shut down due to a potential rock fall hazard.

Highway 4 has been shut down amid construction work between Toquart Bay Road and the Taylor River Rest Area for a stretch of about 0.2 kilometres, Drive BC said.

The closure is about 19 to 20 kilometres east of the south boundary of Pacific Rim National Park.

Drive BC said it was due to rock scaling safety concerns as well as a rock fall hazard.

The estimated time of reopening for the Highway is 6 p.m. An assessment is underway, Drive BC said.

This is a developing story. More to come.
