Construction is expected to start in the fall at an intersection that has been a safety concern in Port McNeill.

The ministry of transportation and infrastructure has announced design work is underway to improve safety for motorists travelling on Highway 19 at the Campbell Way turn off.

The ministry is working with community staff and first responders to better visibility for people driving at the location.

“We’ve had more accidents at ‘the T’ than anywhere else in our community, and it will be nice to see a fix,” Port McNeill Fire Chief Dean Tait said in a release.

“The intersection of Highway 19 and Campbell Way has been the top of our list of priority tasks of the ministry of transportation and infrastructure for the past 10 years,” Port McNeill Mayor Shirley Ackland said.

“We are very happy our concerns have been heard by government and that this issue will be addressed.”

Design work is expected to be wrapped up to prepare for a contract tender process in the summer.
