An investigation is underway following a fatal helicopter crash near Sayward this morning.

A Hughes 369D helicopter carrying out logging operations crashed north of Sayward along the Johnstone Strait at around 9 a.m. Wednesday, killing the pilot.

According to a BC RCMP press release issued late Wednesday afternoon, the pilot, who was the lone occupant of the helicopter, was found deceased by search and rescue members with 442 Comox.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), which is responsible for investigating aviation accidents, has deployed a team of investigators to the crash scene. BC RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are also working alongside TSB investigators to determine the cause of the crash.

BC RCMP are also asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Sayward detachment at 250-282-5522.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story stated that the helicopter involved was a Cormorant. The TSB confirmed that the type of helicopter involved was not a Cormorant but a Hughes 369D.
