A head-on collision along Highway 19A south of Campbell River has left one person dead.

RCMP say they responded around 2:40 p.m. Sunday to a report of a two-vehicle accident between a car and a pickup truck.

Two people suffered minor injuries, and one was pronounced dead once at hospital.

Mounties say they suspect the car was heading northbound when it lost control and crossed over a double-yellow line into the opposing lane, hitting the pickup truck.

Const. Dave Dormuth from the RCMP’s North Vancouver Island Traffic Services says that weather may have been a factor, but they are still in the early stages of the investigation.

“[The recent heavy rain] Is definitely something we are looking at, the rain, road conditions, we are looking at a whole bunch of factors, we can’t rule anything out at this point,” he said. “There was one person in one vehicle and two in the other.”

RCMP say more details will be released Monday.
