Island Health lifts the order to close all gyms and fitness centres amid the pandemic

Businesses across the province are prepping to reopen amid the pandemic, and now that includes gyms as Island Health has announced they will be lifting the closure order on fitness centres.

Starting Tuesday, May 19, gyms, fitness centres, yoga studios or other training facilities will be permitted to reopen.

“These facilities will be permitted to re-open provided they can meet provincial requirements to protect staff and clients against the spread of COVID-19,” said Island Health in an information bulletin released Friday.

The original order issued by Island Health’s Medical Health Officer on April 2, is being rescinded as the province moves into its second phase of the B.C. Restart Plan.

According to Island Health, any facility wanting to resume operation must develop a plan that follows safety measures laid out by the Provincial Health Office and WorkSafeBC.

Guidance for facility operators and for the public related to gyms and other fitness facilities is now available on the Island Health website.

This announcement comes on the heels of multiple municipalities across the Island reopening outdoor recreational facilities.
