The province has announced the ground-breaking of a new housing facility and a long-term care expansion for seniors in Port Alberni.

The B.C. government is providing $5 million on the two projects near and at the Tsawaayuus Care Facility.

The developments are in partnership with Island Health, the Aboriginal Housing Management Association, Westcoast Native Health Care Society, the Nuu-chah-nulth Economic Development Corporation and the City of Port Alberni.

The 20-one bedroom facility for low-income seniors will be built next to the Tsawaayuus facility.

The facility’s extension will add 13 long-term care bed and the two will be connected by a pedestrian pathway to allow mobility within the campus for residents and patients.

The care facility currently has 30 publicly subsidized beds and one privately funded complex-care bed.

Both projects are expected to be ready for occupancy by late 2019.
