WATCH: The non-profit organization that funds crossing guards in Greater Victoria is looking for donors to keep its operations running.

The non-profit organization that funds crossing guards in Greater Victoria is looking for donors to avoid cutbacks.

The Greater Victoria Crossing Guard Association funds 33 crossing guards, who are paid minimum wage, in Victoria, View Royal, Oak Bay, Saanich and Esquimalt.

Its operating budget is $220,000 a year.

Audrey Smith, the association’s president, says its crossing guards watch over some 10,000 to 15,000 children at 19 schools throughout the capital region.

Smith says the association has applied for funding from various municipalities.

So far, View Royal and Oak Bay have approved its requests.

Saanich and Victoria have not yet reviewed its requests.

“All but Oak Bay are asking us to re-evaluate the requirement for grant funds and even Saanich… is asking us to look for additional sources for funding,” Smith said.
