Drivers may have noticed a jump in fuel prices up and down Vancouver Island this week.

Victoria saw one of the biggest jumps in the country, with prices sitting at 179.9 cents per litre at most gas stations Saturday.

That’s up 14 cents from just one week ago, when gas prices were an average of 165.9 cents per litre in Victoria, according to price-tracking website GasBuddy.

Nanaimo also saw a huge leap in fuel prices this week, with gas prices rocketing up from 159.9 cents per litre one week ago to 179.9 cents per litre this week.

Provincially, gas prices are sitting at an average of 174.1 cents per litre, the highest national average in Canada, according to GasBuddy.

It’s followed closely by Newfoundland, where the average price of fuel is 172.2 cents per litre Saturday.

Manitoba is currently reporting the lowest average fuel prices, with gas pegged at 124.7 cents per litre, according to GasBuddy.

Nationally, the average price of gas in Canada is 149.3 cents per litre, up about 1.4 cents from this time last week.

Experts say the sudden spike in fuel prices in British Columbia is due to a supply pinch, with a refinery in Burnaby shutting down.
