A garbage truck struck and knocked down a hydro pole in Saanich around 12 p.m. Thursday, at the intersection of Burnside and Harriet Roads.

Saanich police say the vehicle was heading westbound when it turned sharply onto Burnside road.

“[The garbage truck] made a hard right turn and drove over the sidewalk, then striking the hydro pole and snapping it in half,” said Cst. Dave Smit from Saanich police.

No one was injured, but witnesses say they saw flashes of blue light when the lines went down.

“All of a sudden I saw this blue light in my mirror, and I turned around and witnessed the whole pole coming down on top of the garbage truck,” said one witness.

“[the dump truck] then tried to pull forward and there was another big blue light of shock that went through, I actually felt it go through my car.”

Both Saanich and Victoria emergency crews arrived on the scene.

BC Hydro says power will likely be restored in the area and roads open around 6 p.m.
