The District of Sooke is crediting emergency responders from the municipality and neighbouring ones for their quick efforts to extinguish a garage fire over the weekend.

Just before 8 a.m. Saturday, Sooke Fire Rescue was called to Sooke River Road for a report of a fire, which the district says originated in a garage and spread to a small unit attached to it.

It says there were no reports of injuries, adding that the occupants were there at the time and called 911, “facilitating the timely arrival” of firefighters.

Crews were then able to bring the fire under control and prevent the flames from spreading to the main residence, which was not impacted, according to the district.

“The timely intervention of Sooke Fire Rescue, along with mutual aid partners, including Otter Point, Metchosin, and East Sooke, contributed to the successful containment of the fire,” it said.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious, though the incident remains under investigation.

“Early investigation indicates that the fire was most likely accidental in nature, caused by an electrical malfunction,” the district added.

“The Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) has been notified for further awareness and assessment.”
