As the search for three missing Tla-o-qui-aht fishermen continues off the coast of Tofino, a fundraising effort is underway to help their children.

Marcel Martin, Carl Michael and Terrance Brown Jr were among five men on-board a 20ft fishing boat when it capsized before dawn last Friday near Duffin Cove.

The trio has not been seen since, two others were rescued.

Martin and his wife Ivy are parents to three children, Michael has one child who is being cared for by his mother, and Brown Jr. and his spouse Selina Howard have one child.

Now a GoFundme page has been set up to try to provide for the men’s families.

“We invite you to walk with us in providing for these families to create space in which the children’s needs can come first, both materially and emotionally,”  a note on the page reads.

“Many grief counsellors recommend those experiencing profound grief to postpone major decisions for one year.  We hope to provide that security to allow the focus to be on healing & reduce some the stress during this adjustment period.”

The funds will be divided equally between the three families and go directly to the children and their mothers and/or their legal guardians.

You can find the page here

Donations can also be made directly to each family at the CIBC in Tofino through the family’s names.
