A new poll shows a strong friendship felt between Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, but feelings are not nearly as warm for B.C. among its western counterparts.

An Angus Reid survey Thursday says only about one-in-five from the three provinces west of Ontario feel they get a fair shake from B.C., while that opinion is even less east of Manitoba.

When asked which of the provinces they feel are particularly friendly toward their own province, Saskatchewan led the way with 23 per cent sharing a positive feeling for B.C., and the number drops to just six per cent for those in Atlantic Canada.

British Columbians had the highest praise for neighbouring Alberta at 31 per cent, with the most fractured perceived relationship with Quebec at six per cent.

Although Saskatchewan had the most warmth towards B.C., it is second to Alberta for feeling less close to Canada’s western-most province.

Fifty-seven per cent of Albertans said they felt mistreated by B.C. and 26 per cent from Saskatchewan, while no fewer than 20 per cent in all other provinces and regions felt a cold shoulder from B.C.

The Angus Reid survey shows views of Quebec outside its borders are hardly enthusiastic, with friendly feelings felt most in Ontario at only 12 per cent, while Alberta (81 per cent) and Saskatchewan (74 per cent) feel Quebec is less close or unfriendly to them.

B.C. has the highest perception of having no province being particularly kind at 43 per cent, followed by Ontario at 41 per cent.

Angus Reid also asked about the costs and benefits of the federation, which found 32 per cent of Canadians felt Alberta gives more than it gets, which is double Saskatchewan’s 16 per cent, considered next highest on that list.

Nearly four-in-10 British Columbians feel they are getting a raw deal, while 10 per cent of Canadians think B.C. gives more than it gets.

On the other end of the spectrum, Quebec is looked at as getting the most out of the country at 53 per cent, well ahead of Ontario at 24 per cent.

Angus Reid says that feeling is relatively abundant in Quebec itself, with just over one-in-five residents saying this, twice as high as any other province’s residents saying this of their home region.

Eight per cent of Canadians say B.C. gets more than it gives, with only four per cent of British Columbians sharing that view.
