BC Transit is offering free transit rides in some areas of the province in recognition of Earth Day.

On April 22, BC Transit will provide four transit systems across the province with free transit for both fixed-route and handyDART services, with the Victoria Regional Transit System being  selected as one of the four.

The others include West Kootenay, Whistler and South Okanagan-Similkameen’s Penticton routes only.

“Earth Day highlights the importance of sustainability and encourages people to make choices that reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) and help protect our environment,” BC Transit said in a release. “Taking public transit is one way to make a difference.”

The transit authority said it is committed to making a positive impact on the environment, adding its Low Carbon Fleet Program is underway.

That program supports provincial targets for GHG emissions and aligns with CleanBC.

The current province-wide fleet has more than 280 Compressed Natural Gas buses and funding is in place for the future addition of 141 electric buses.

BC Transit encourages customers to use the Transit App, Google Transit or any other app of their choice for real-time bus tracking and planning your next transit journey.
