The Capital Regional District (CRD) Arts Commission has approved a new round of grants for non-profit organizations to carry out unique art projects and services.

The Arts Commission will be allocating $167,320 in funding to 37 local non-profit art organizations through the Arts & Culture Support Service.

The focus of many of these new grants will be on enjoying “art at a distance,” according to the CRD.

“Supporting the arts remains a priority,” said CRD Arts Commission Chair Jeremy Loveday.

“The lives of people who work in the arts and culture sector are being greatly impacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the data from our recent Progress Report we know that our community is better off when we invest in these organizations.”

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the CRD Arts Commission highlighted some of the unique projects that will be available for Vancouver Islanders this summer.

One example is a new community mural that is being planned by the Metchosin Arts and Cultural Association.

Another example provided is over on Galiano Island, the Yellowhouse Art Centre is working on organizing multiple ‘Art at Home’ classes, concerts and exhibits available to people in the region.

These are just a few examples of what the CRD says is an extensive list of “arts and culture initiatives offered at a distance” by grantees.

The over $160,000 in grants were awarded through four different funding programs: Equity, IDEA, Incubator and Project, Series & Extended Programming grants.
