Flags to fly at half-mast to honour former Oak Bay mayor

Flags at Oak Bay Municipal Hall and Victoria City Hall will fly at half-mast from Monday to Thursday to honour former Oak Bay mayor Nils Jensen.

Jensen died after a brief battle with cancer. B.C.’s information and privacy commissioner Michael McEvoy confirmed his friend’s death Sunday morning.

Jensen was 69. He was a four-term member of Oak Bay council and served two terms as mayor. He was first elected to council in 1996 then mayor in 2011.

The flags at the two municipal halls will be flown at half-mast from Monday until after the memorial service for Jensen at Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Oak Bay High School Community Theatre.

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of our former colleague Nils Jensen. He was deeply committed to serving his community and will be missed,” Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said in a statement. “On behalf of Victoria City Council, I would like to extend condolences to his family.”

Jensen is survived by his wife Jean and their two sons.
