One lane of Highway 19 north of Nanaimo is closed following a fish offal spill, and DriveBC says drivers can expect delays.

In a notice at 5:55 p.m. Monday, DriveBC said one lane of Highway 19 was closed between McKercher Road and Superior Road in Lantzville due to a material spill.

Photos posted to Facebook show the condition of the road, with one commenter saying, “apparently someone dropped a bunch of fish guts, so it’s going to be slippery for a while.”

Another passerby, who claimed the area “reeks,” suggested drivers who pass through go “straight to a car wash with undercarriage sprays.”

DriveBC is asking drivers to watch for traffic control crews cleaning up the spill. It says all turn slots connecting the highway to Superior Road are currently closed.

Another update is expected at 7 p.m. on DriveBC’s website.
