An overnight fire has been put out after a blaze erupted in a unit in an apartment building located on Fort Street in Victoria.

The fire, which occurred at the complex located at 1180 Fort Street, appeared to start in an apartment immediately above the parking lot, which is accessed off of View Street.

In a short matter of time, the blaze spread to the unit directly above the origin of the fire as well, also damaging the balcony of the unit on the top floor. Crews say that the fire didn’t spread inwards to the rest of the building.

Firefighters could be seen battling the blaze at around 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning and remained on-site for multiple hours.

Victoria Fire says that 18 firefighters responded to the call as it came right at the time of a shift change, allowing more staff to be available.

Significant water damage was sustained in the units next to where the fire originated and three suites sustained significant fire damage. The building also took on smoke damage as a result of the incident.

At this time, it is unclear what sparked the fire, but two investigators were on hand Tuesday morning in order to carry out an assessment of the building.

Fire crews are also unsure as to when residents will be allowed back inside the building, however, have confirmed that several residents have been displaced from their homes and are being put in touch with emergency social services.

This is a developing story and will be updated once more information is learned.
