Crews are seen tearing down a vacant house in Colwood following a fire there on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

Fire inspectors are investigating the cause of an early morning fire at a vacant Colwood home.

Firefighters were called to the 400-block of Goldstream Avenue at 5:42 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a structure fire, according to Colwood Fire Chief Bryan Erwin.

Crews from Langford and View Royal also responded.

Erwin said when crews arrived, they found the fire coming from the interior of the building.

While extinguishing the fire, one firefighter sustained minor injuries after the floor collapsed when they entered the building.

“They have minor injuries, nothing significant at all. I think it was just more scarier than they would have liked,” Erwin said.

He says the fire was put out very quickly.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Erwin said the fire was in a vacant structure on a piece of property that was slated for development, adding at this point, nothing is indicating it was suspicious in nature.

“Being a vacant building, we are unclear exactly to the exact nature at this point,” Erwin explained.

Traffic in the area was closed until about 7 a.m. while crews were on scene.
