Smoke alarms should be tested every month, the Campbell River Fire Department says.

Smoke alarms should be tested every month, the Campbell River Fire Department says.

It’s almost time to change the clocks back one hour and the Campbell River Fire Department said it’s also a good time to put new batteries in smoke detectors.

Daylight Saving Time comes to an end at 2 a.m. on Nov. 4 and Campbell River Fire Chief Thomas Doherty said all residents should be switching the smoke alarm batteries before they set their clocks back.

“Saving your life can be as simple as changing your smoke alarm batteries once a year and replacing smoke alarms every seven to 10 years,” Doherty said in a release.

There are different smoke alarms available for those who are deaf or hearing impaired, such as those with strobe lights.

“We recommend installing a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside every sleeping area, and on each floor of your home. And remember to test your smoke alarms at least once a month,” adds Doherty.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire at home in half. If people get an early warning, they have more time to escape a burning structure and call 911.
