A fire in View Royal Saturday morning has displaced four tenants, with one person suffering burns to their back.

View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst says that crews received a report of a structure fire in the 100 block of Atkins Rd. around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.

While en route to the scene, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm fire because of smoke and flame visible from the highway.

On arrival crews found a single-family dwelling with multiple suites with heavy fire on the west side of the building.

Hurst says the fire was quickly knocked down. BCEHS says that one occupant was treated for burns on scene. There were no other injuries from the blaze.

Westshore Fire is currently investigating the cause of the fire, however Hurst says that it does not appear to be intentional or suspicious.

The displaced tenants of the building will be looked after by View Royal and Colwood emergency support teams who will get the accommodation for the next 72 hours while crews investigate the scene.

Hurst says that there were no working smoke alarms in the house. “This is a good reminder to ensure your smoke alarms are working properly,” Hurst said.
