Nanaimo Fire Rescue extinguished a house fire in the 1600 block of Meredith Street on April 13, 2023.

A house that is believed to have been occupied by squatters was destroyed in a fire Thursday evening, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded to the home in the 1600 block of Meredith Road, and requested RCMP control vehicle and foot traffic in the area.

R/Const. Gary O’Brien, spokesperson for Nanaimo RCMP says the house was destroyed and fire crews determined there was no one inside at the time.

“An adult woman was residing in the home and was seen walking away shortly before the fire started,” O’Brien said in an email to CHEK News. “That person has not been located since but is not believed to be in the home.”

Fire crews will be attending the home on Friday to continue the investigation and determine whether it needs to be turned over to RCMP.
