An overnight fire has damaged four small buildings at North Island College’s (NIC) Comox Valley campus.

The Courtenay Fire Department responded to the blaze at 3 a.m. in an area known as the Village portables.

According to NIC, one classroom and three small buildings in the Village Annex are closed until further notice due to fire damage.

“We are grateful that there have been no reports of injuries,” Colin Fowler, Vice President, Finance & College Services, said in a release. “We want to thank the Courtenay Fire Department for their quick response, which ensured the fire was contained to the Village.”

NIC has started contacting staff and students and is working to support any operational issues resulting from the fire.

“Any time an unexpected event happens to our community, it has the potential to be disruptive,” added Fowler. “We are working to support those whose used the affected spaces and ensuring that all community members are supported.”

The fire in under investigation.

The college said Thursday’s graduation ceremony in Campbell River will not be affected.
