Electric car was modified

Nanaimo firefighters put out a car fire on the Nanaimo Parkway but not before the electric car was heavily damaged.

The call came in shortly after nine o’clock Wednesday evening.

The driver was travelling southbound on the Parkway, near the Cedar Road exit, when the fire broke out.

He escaped unharmed.

When the firefighter’s arrived they found the front end of the older model Honda CRX engulfed in flames.

Cpt. Mike Allard, with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, says the owner modified the car to be electric which made the job more challenging for crews.

“The wires you would cut were unidentifiable and so it made it much more complex than if it was a simple factory electric car,” said Allard.

The owner declined an on-camera interview but said he’s a big fan of electric cars and he had also modified his for performance.
