A fire has caused extensive damage to a house under renovation on Trent Street in Saanich.
Saanich Deputy Fire Chief Dan Wood said Saanich and Oak Bay firefighters were called to the fire just after 8 p.m. Sunday night after a child passing by on a bicycle called 911.
Oak Bay firefighters were the first to arrive and found a fully-involved strucutre fire at a two-storey house under construction.

“A home on either side were being threatened by flames. Crews took care of protecting them. Our Saanich crews arrived and joined forces with Oak Bay and got water on the fire and extinguished it,” Wood said.
The fire was extinguished by midnight but crews stayed throughout the night to put out hot spots. There were 16 Saanich firefighters and five Oak Bay firefighters on scene and the Oak Bay firefighters were able to leave soon after the Saanich Fire Department arrived.
Wood said the building is now too dangerous to enter.
Nobody was in the building at the time of the fire. Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze, where it started and decide what will happen to the house. An insurance adjustor will also look at the house.
“The investigators are in consultation with the owner on what was actually in the building,” Wood said.
Wood said all the windows and doors had been locked before the fire and there was combustible materials inside the house as it was under construction.
