Fire at Pioneer House Restaurant attached building extinguished

Firefighters have extinguished a blaze at a building attached to the Pioneer House Restaurant on the Trans-Canada Highway near Cowichan Bay.

The fire was reported around 11:45 a.m. and the Cowichan Bay fire department responded.

Mutual aid was also requested from Mill Bay and Duncan. Within an hour, the fire had been put out and crews were mopping up. The fire did not spread to the main log house building.

“We’re quite fortunate that it didn’t spread to the trees in the back. We had excellent crews on scene with a very quick response, we’re able to knock down this fire very quickly,” Deputy Fire Chief with Cowichan Bay Steve McCaffery said.

The Pioneer House Restaurant is located at 4675 Trans-Canada Highway near the Bench Road turnoff. There were traffic delays in the area due to the blaze.

Officials at the restaurant confirmed the fire was in an outbuilding and the cause of the blazeis unknown. The restaurant will be closed for the rest of the day while smoke damage is assessed. There will be a notice posted once the restaurant reopens.
