Prepare to sing ‘Oh Canada’ with friends and family over any video conferencing app of your choosing because the federal government has announced that on July 1, we will celebrate Canada Day virtually.

In a press release issued by Minister Steven Guilbeault and the Government of Canada, a statement reads that due to COVID-19, “our government has decided to celebrate Canada Day differently this year.”

Large gatherings, parties, concerts, food trucks and fireworks have been a Canada Day staple for Canadians across the country and Vancouver Island has earned a stellar reputation for putting on a tremendous celebration. With the COVID-19 landscape uncertain, however, the government isn’t taking any chances.

“For Canada Day 2020, we are working with Canadian artists and artisans to put together a virtual program, reflecting our diversity and values, and showcasing the immense talent our country has to offer,” read Minister Guilbeault’s statement.

With this release, the government isn’t necessarily saying you can’t enjoy fireworks this Canada Day, but you might just have to watch them on a screen.

“On July 1, Canadians will be able to tune into virtual Canada Day celebrations,” said the statement from the federal government.

Guilbeault said that more details on a celebration agenda this Canada Day will be unveiled in the future.
