One person has died following a fatal head-on collision on Highway 18 about two kilometres east of Lake Cowichan, according to police.

The collision, which happened around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, involved two vehicles and closed a stretch of the highway in both directions, North Cowichan RCMP said in a news release.

Police say the driver of a minivan travelling westbound collided head-on with a flatbed truck going eastbound, and the van’s driver died at the scene. The driver of the truck, meanwhile, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

“The RCMP traffic analyst and Lake Cowichan RCMP officers are investigating the cause of the collision, and the highway is expected to be closed in both directions until approximately 7 p.m.,” states the release.

At 6:15 p.m., DriveBC tweeted that the highway had fully reopened.

Lake Cowichan RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision to call the detachment at 250-749-6668.
