WatchAn elderly woman has been found dead in her Cumberland home after firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire.
Investigators say they have determined a fatal fire in Cumberland was not criminal in nature.

Comox Valley RCMP say a fatal fire Wednesday night in Cumberland is not considered criminal in nature.

At around 6 p.m., firefighters were called to a house on Sutton Road after a care-aide called to say she found the house full of smoke when she went to visit an 85-year-old woman.

Police say the body of the woman was found by firefighters during an initial search of the residence.

“Investigators have examined all of the evidence at the scene and determined that the fire was not criminal in nature,” Const. Monika Terragni, media relations officer with Comox Valley RCMP, wrote in a release.

Fire officials said the smouldering fire could have been burning for 30 minutes or so before the care-aide arrived. The BC Coroners Service is investigating.
