The upcoming byelection in Nanaimo to replace longtime MLA Leonard Krog promises to be one of the most watched in recent memory, and a name with a long history in local politics is vying to be on the ballot for the BC Green Party.

Retired educator Michele Ney, daughter of longtime Nanaimo mayor and area MLA Frank Ney, is fighting for the nomination.

She is up against Duane Nickull, with 20 years experience in the software industry, this isn’t this first foray into politics for the former world cup level mountain bike racer. Nickull ran for the BC Conservatives in Vancouver in 2013.

A nomination meeting will be held in Nanaimo on Saturday, December 15th from 1:30-5 PM, the location has yet to be confirmed.

New Nanaimo mayor Leonard Krog officially resigns as an MLA on Friday.

A date for the byelection has not been set.
