At approximately 1:30 p.m., a house fire was reported at a one-and-a-half story house. Campbell River Fire Department responded with about 18 firefighters.

Campbell River Fire Chief Ian Baikie said firefighters saw flames coming out of the back window. The fire spread to the kitchen and living room, as well as two bedrooms in the second floor. The basement was damaged, but the fire did not spread to any other structures in the area.

Baikie said two adults and six children lived in the older home, which had a number of renovations.

“The floor plan was a little more complex than a single house built only once only,” Baikie said.

The family did have homeowner’s insurance. Their two cats were also outside when firefighters arrived, so were not caught in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
