The federal government says the environment review process is underway for a proposed liquified natural gas (LNG) project on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) says it is inviting public input to comment on which aspects of the environment may be affected by the Kwispaa LNG project and what should be examined during the environmental assessment.

Steelhead LNG and Huu-ay-aht First Nations are co-managing the development of the proposed project to construct and operate an LNG export facility at Sarita Bay, 10 kilometres northeast of Bamfield in the Alberni Inlet, approximately 70 kilometres southwest of Port Alberni.

Public comments will be accepted until January 16 and will be taken into consideration in finalizing the Environmental Impact Statement, which will be delivered to the Kwispaa LNG partnership.

The project would convert natural gas to LNG for export to global markets and include jetty-moored floating LNG production units, marine terminals, and onshore components.

Subject to approvals, the final investment decision could be in 2020, with phase one operating by 2024.

Steelhead LNG says the estimated capital cost for the project is $18 billion, including pipeline expenses.

Steelhead LNG says at full build, the facility would produce an estimated 24 million tonnes of LNG per year over a lifespan of at least 25 years.

Huu-ay-aht citizens voted to approve the proposed project in March of 2017.
