A Langford law firm was shut down Friday afternoon after the office received an envelope containing a suspicious white powder and a threatening letter.

BC Ambulance, police and a hazmat team were called to Hemminger Law Group’s office, located at 2745 Veterans Memorial Pky, at around 11:30 a.m. after the envelope was received.

“We decided to treat it as a high-risk incident and quarantine everybody,” Const. Sean Van Londersele of the West Shore RCMP said.

A decontamination tent was set up in front of the building for all five of the employees who were in contact with the unknown substance. They were also taken to the hospital for further examination. Van Londersele said the employees appear to be OK at this time.

West Shore RCMP are investigating the powder and the letter. The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit will assess and ensure the safe removal of the unknown substance. Police said the incident is isolated to the law office and there is no risk to the public.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call West Shore RCMP 250-474-2264 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or online at www.victoriacrimestoppers.ca.
