The emergency department at Port McNeill Hospital has temporarily closed.

Island Health announced Sunday (July 31) that Port McNeill Hospital’s emergency department will be closed until 7 p.m. due to staffing availability.

All other inpatient services, however, will continue as normal at Port McNeill Hospital.

Island Health said anyone experiencing a medical emergency should call 911 or proceed to Port Hardy Hospital, if they can.

“Island Health and BC Emergency Health Services have protocols in place to ensure patients are transported to the appropriate site,” the health authority said in its statement.

Island Health said it realizes the situation is not ideal for the community.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience experienced by this temporary service reduction,” the health authority said.
