Electrical fire forces eight people to evacuate early Friday morning in Victoria

Eight people were forced to find alternative accommodations early Friday morning after an electrical fire started at a residential building in Victoria.

Officials say just after 2 a.m. Victoria fire was called to a house converted to apartments in the 1200-block of Hillside Avenue for a report of a smoke smell on the main floor.

Eight occupants in the three suites evacuated the building and waited outside while firefighters looked for the source of the smell.

Victoria fire determined an electrical circuit had been tripped and located a hot spot in a basement wall.

Firefighters used an axe to open the basement wall and a chainsaw to remove flooring from above and found an electrical fire in the wall cavity between the basement and main floor.

Water from a fire hose was used to extinguish the fire and embers.

No injuries are reported and officials estimate the damage to be around $50,000, which was confined to the area where the fire started.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and an investigation continues.
