An 89-year-old man is recovering from multiple wounds to his face after being attacked in Courtenay early Wednesday morning.

Comox Valley RCMP say the victim was sitting inside his vehicle parked on the 400-block of 5th Street around 4:15 a.m. when he was approached by a man on a bicycle.

The man asked him for a cigarette, when the victim told him he didn’t have any, the man assaulted him with what appeared to be a machete.

The victim drove himself to the Comox Valley RCMP detachment to report the attack. He was then taken to hospital.

The suspect is described as young, possibly in his 20’s, with a dark complexion. He was wearing something on his head.

“At this point in the investigation, the attack appears to be completely unprovoked” said Cst. Monika Terragni.

“Investigators are looking for anyone who may have seen the suspect or for anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage during the early morning hours downtown.”

She says investigators from the Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit are gathering evidence in the area and will continue with the investigation.
