Island Health says eight additional cases of COVID-19 have been identified at Sunset Lodge long-term care home in Victoria, bringing the total of positive tests to 34 since the outbreak was declared Aug. 27.

Island Health says eight additional cases of COVID-19 have been identified related to an outbreak at Sunset Lodge long-term care home in Victoria.

The outbreak was declared on Aug. 27.

The additional cases include seven residents and one staff, detected through testing performed Aug. 31.

Island Health says in total, 14 staff and 20 residents have tested positive for COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the health authority confirmed the death of one resident related to the outbreak.

Island Health says the majority of the residents continue to experience mild or no symptoms.

COVID-19 can have an incubation period and Island Health says it is likely new positive tests are a result of transmission that occurred prior to the outbreak being identified.

“Island Health will continue to work with leadership and staff to respond to the outbreak and protect the health of all residents and staff. Communication with residents, families and staff is ongoing,” the health authority said in a release Tuesday night.

Sunset Lodge is owned and operated by the Salvation Army.
