WATCH: A 25-year-old man is being investigated for impaired driving after a near-tragedy on the Island Highway overnight. It happened just after midnight on the stretch through Nanoose Bay when a driver on the wrong side of the highway’s cement median crashed head-on into an oncoming car. Skye Ryan reports.
Investigators are looking at speed and alcohol as potential factors of a two-vehicle crash north of Nanoose Bay after police received a call of one vehicle going in the wrong direction on Highway 19.
Oceanside RCMP said they responded to a call at 12:20 a.m. Friday morning of a car going the wrong way on Island Highway, and two vehicles collided near the Petro Canada station at Northwest Bay Road.
The driver of a Toyota Rav4, the vehicle travelling in the wrong direction, was taken to hospital in an ambulance and police expected he would be flown by air ambulance to a larger hospital.
Police said the driver of a black Volkswagen Jetta was able to get out of the vehicle on his own and suffered minor injuries.
The southbound lanes of Highway 19 were closed at the scene for two-and-a-half hours and traffic was diverted through Nanoose Bay.
