A park near Qualicum Bay will be closed to the public for the remainder of the year.

Dunsmuir Community Park, located on Horne Lake Road, will be closed beginning Oct. 12 for construction on planned upgrades, according to the Nanaimo Regional District.

The upgrades — which are part of the second phase of planned improvements for the park — include the installation of new playground areas, paved pathways, benches, picnic tables, drainage improvements, tree planting, and a “shade” structure.

Construction is expected to be completed in January 2022.

“The park will be closed to the public during this time to ensure everyone’s safety,” the district said in a press release.

Dunsmuir Community Park — sometimes known as Centennial Park — is a 2-hectare green space that has been undergoing significant upgrades as part of the multi-phase park improvement plan.

The first phase of upgrades saw a new multi-purpose sports court with perimeter fencing, new driveway access, an off-street parking lot, and an entrance sign installed at the park.
