A driver was issued a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian after an 11-year-old boy was struck while crossing a Campbell River street Tuesday morning.

Police said the boy was struck by a car while crossing South Dogwood Street at the Robron Road crosswalk at 8 a.m. Police and ambulance responded immediately. The boy was taken to hospital and later released with minor injuries.

Campbell River RCMP investigated the collision and brought in an RCMP Traffic Services Reconstructionist. According to police, the initial investigation showed two factors may have contributed to the incident: glare from the sun and possible hesitation by the boy to cross and the driver to wait. The crosswalk lights were functioning but the boy was hit while crossing.

The driver in the car was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act with failure to yield to a pedestrian. The ticket includes a $167 fine and three demerit points.

“We are so thankful this did not end in a worse case,” Cpl. Ron Vlooswyk of the Campbell River RCMP said in a release.

“Pedestrians have the right of way and drivers must stop for them at intersections and in crosswalks.”
