A dump truck tipped over on the Nanaimo Parkway, and fire crews are asking drivers to avoid the area.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue says the southbound lanes of Nanaimo Parkway between Northfield and East Wellington roads are expected to be closed for several hours as crews deal with a dump truck that tipped on its side.

David Dales, assistant fire chief with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, says multiple people called 911 around 12:21 p.m. to report that a large truck had crashed on the Nanaimo Parkway.

“It was a large vehicle, a single patient is requiring medical care and they have been transported to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital,” Dales said in a phone interview with CHEK News. “And we will be on scene for quite a while dealing with the aftermath of this.”

BC Emergency Health Services says one ambulance responded to the crash and paramedics cared for and transported one person to the hospital in stable condition.

Dales says large trucks like this tend to be carrying quite a bit of fuel, so the crews are also working to contain a fuel spill in addition to the garbage spilled on the road.

He is asking drivers to avoid the area for several hours as it is cleared up.

Nanaimo RCMP say at this time it appears the driver went into medical distress which resulted in the crash.
