VicPD arrested two people last night in separate incidents involving road blocks

A driver attempting to avoid an impaired driving counter attack roadblock led VicPD on a short chase early Sunday morning.

The driver swerved onto Harbour Road in an attempt to avoid the roadblock just before 3 a.m.

VicPD traffic officers left the roadblock to stop the driver, who crashed at the north end of Harbour Road near the intersection at Tyee Road.

The driver then attempted to flee their vehicle but was arrested.

Paramedics assessed the driver for injury and the driver was medically cleared.

Officials with VicPD say that an impaired driving investigation is underway and a Saanich PD traffic analyst was called to assist in the investigation while VicPD analysts continued to operate the roadblock.

“This crash was the second of two attempts by allegedly impaired drivers to avoid roadblocks late last night/early this morning,” said Bowen Osoko, VicPD Communications Coordinator, in an emailed statement.

Osoko says another driver fled a counter attack road block after being stopped just before 1 a.m.

There were no injuries from this second incident and no charges have been recommended yet, and the file remains under investigation.

“Our officers are out on the hunt for impaired drivers,” said Osoko. “There is no excuse for driving impaired. Taxis, transit, designated drivers – heck even calling a tow truck to tow your vehicle home – cost less than a single impaired driving charge or Immediate Roadside Prohibition and saves lives.”
