Nanaimo RCMP say a 69-year-old driver involved in a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway south of Nanaimo has died.

Shortly before noon Monday, the driver was heading north on the highway south of Morden Road when he suffered a medical condition.

Police say the crash, a rollover into the ditch, happened as a result of the driver experiencing medical distress.

Firefighters, paramedics and an air ambulance arrived at the scene and extensive efforts to resuscitate the driver were unsuccessful.

His wife, who was in the passenger seat, was shaken but not seriously injured.

The pair were just returning to their Nanaimo-area home from the Nanaimo Airport, after landing on a flight from Calgary.

Northbound lanes on the highway were diverted until an on-scene examination was completed.

Police say the BC Coroners Service is investigating.
