It was a ruff day for a Campbell River dog who had to be rescued from a house fire on Friday.

At around 12:24 p.m., Campbell River Fire Rescue crews received a call about smoke coming from a house on Birch Street. When crews arrived, they saw heavy black smoke coming out of the second-storey patio doors.

The firefighters were able to contain the fire to the living room within a matter of minutes. They then found the dog lying on the floor in a rear bedroom. The dog was brought out of the house and firefighters then used pet oxygen equipment. The animal was taken to a local vet and breathing on its own.

“The interior attack crew that went in to suppress the fire brought the dog down to the doorway and then two other members met them at the door and carried them to the front yard and began to work on the dog,” Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty said.

Nobody else was home at the time of the fire.

Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty said two dogs were killed in a fire last month so it was nice to save a pet.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Doherty said the fire damage was in the living room area and there was smoke damage in other parts of the house.
