A dog stuck on the ice was not found during a Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue call Monday afternoon.

Station 31 in Brentwood Bay was initially called out for “two people in a boat” stuck in the ice around noon.

In a social media post, the team said that once on scene, the person who fired flares said it was for a dog on the ice.

“The dog, a black lab, was not found and is presumed drowned. We have talked with the owner,” the post reads. “Our thoughts are with the owners and their family.”

The search and rescue says BC Ferries Klitsa crew, the ferry between Brentwood Bay and Mill Bay, diverted the ferry to the scene to help.
