Dog missing after fire destroys Metchosin home

A dog remains unaccounted for after fire destroyed a home in Metchosin on Thursday night.

Fire crews were called in around 9:45 p.m. to the large house in The Aquarius subdivision on Pegasus Way off Rocky Point Road.

Metchosin Fire Chief Stephanie Dunlop says the person who called 911 had  gone to warn the residents after smelling smoke and found the back of the house was already on fire.

There was no one there at the time, the people renting the home were having dinner with relatives.

Fire crews arrived to find the structure engulfed in flames.

Metchosin firefighters were helped by crews from Sooke, Otter Point and East Sooke.

The fire was contained to the single structure but there was concern flames could spread to nearby trees and brush.

Crews remained on scene through the night to watch for hot spots.

The residents of the home will be staying with family who live in the area.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, Chief Dunlop says the investigation will get underway on Friday morning.
