A Vancouver Island woman says driving the speed limit and leaving ample room in front of her was the reason she didn’t collide with an errant propane tank on Island Highway Monday.

Sydney Hong says she was driving northbound on Island Highway near Chemainus on the holiday Monday just before noon, when a propane tank flew off a vehicle in front of her before hitting the median, only to come ricocheting towards her car.

“I had hoped it would stay to the left side of the road but it bounced off of the barrier and came towards my vehicle,” said Hong.

“All I could imagine was it getting stuck under my vehicle and blowing up there.”

Hong was able to slow down to avoid hitting the tank, only due to the fact that she’d been driving safely.

“If everyone had been speeding or following too closely this could have easily ended in a multi-vehicle collision because we had to dodge the propane tank and use our brakes,” said Hong.

Hong says she shared the video on social media because she wants to remind people to properly secure loads to vehicles, but also to keep safe travelling distances and follow the speed limits.
