The City of Victoria is reminding people to be cautious after a beach fire on Dallas Road spread and burned greenspace on the nearby hill.
Beach fires are not permitted on Dallas Road, and there is currently a campfire ban in Coastal Fire Centre due to the dry conditions.
In a tweet, Victoria says the fire was just metres from another beach fire that caused damage in July.
The city is reminding people that smoking is not permitted on beaches or parks at any time, and propane or natural gas appliances are also prohibited.
Anyone who sees a fire or smells smoke is asked to call 911.
The fire danger rating for the South Island remains high.
For public safety and environmental protection:
🚫 No smoking in parks or on beaches at any time
🚫 No propane or natural gas appliances at any time
