Nanaimo RCMP say a stretch of Nicol Street has reopened Tuesday evening following a motor vehicle accident involving a cyclist and a pickup truck.

“Police have cleared the scene, and all lanes have re-opened,” said Mounties in a post on X (formerly Twitter) around 6:30 p.m.

“Victim remains in hospital,” said RCMP, adding more information about the incident will be released Wednesday morning.

In an original social media post around 5 p.m., RCMP said Nicol Street was closed near Needham Street. “Please use (an) alternative route,” they said at the time.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien told CHEK News the crash was “serious.” He said an RCMP crash analyst was on scene, and the road closure was expected to last for a while.
